News for Week of April 20 - 24, 2026

Earth Day Wednesday, April 22nd: 

This week, we will honour Earth Week by discussing how we can care for God's creation. On Wednesday, Earth Day, students are invited to wear Earth colours (blue, green, brown) and/or Earth slogans.

Our Learning:

Language:

This week, in our phonics lessons, we will explore the -ar sound, as in the words car, far, star, art, arm, bark, part.

This week's new heart word:  pretty

This week's spelling check-in will be about the ending patterns we learned about during our last unit: -dge, -tch and -ch,  -ed, -ild, -ind, -old, -olt, -ost, -y, -le. It will also consist of an assessment of some of our recently learned heart words.

Please have your child practise the heart words we have learned so far in class: the, I, a, said, to, do, of, see, he, be, me, from, you, what, have, look, book, are, was, your, want, go, no, so, goes, says, they, their, were, talk, walk, could, should, would, or, for, who, by, my, one, once, use, two, does, many, any, been, into, friend, because, woman, women, both, four, fourth, forty, people, *pretty.

We continue to work on our reading comprehension skills. When answering reading comprehension questions, the Grade 2s are working on finding the answers or clues in the text and answering in a complete sentence. Next, the Grade 2s will start to practise adding details to support their answers. In Grade 3, we use "A.P.E." to help us remember what to include when answering short answer reading comprehension questions. Math: 

The Grade 2s and 3s will continue to learn about multiplication and division. Please note that in Grade 2, the expectation is to learn to represent multiplication as repeated equal groups. The focus of division in Grade 2 is to represent division of up to 12 items as the equal sharing of a quantity.

The Grade 3s will also continue to learn about multiplication and division. 

In Grade 3, the curriculum focus is to represent multiplication of numbers up to 10 x 10 and division up to 100 ÷ 10, using a variety of tools and drawings, including arrays and number lines. In addition, Grade 3 students need to recall and demonstrate multiplication facts of 2, 5, and 10, and related division facts.

HELP PLEASE - Grade 3 Multiplication: To support your child in this learning, practising the times tables of 2, 5, and 10 (e.g., 2 x ___; 5 x ___; 10 x ___) on a regular basis will help your child's confidence. If your child already has his/her times tables of 2, 5, and 10 memorized, encouraging them to practise times tables for all other numbers to 10 will surely do wonders to prepare for Grade 4. 

As stated in the Grade 3 Math curriculum, "Having automatic recall of multiplication and division facts is important when carrying out mental or written calculations and frees up working memory when solving complex problems and tasks."

Homework this week:

As usual this week, your child will bring home their Reading Homework Folder with some phonics and reading homework. Please note that the Grade 3s will not bring home an EQAO At-Home practice booklet this week.
