Pink Shirt Day Wednesday, Feb. 26th:
Students are encouraged to wear pink on Wednesday, February 26th to support bullying awareness and anti-bullying. The aim is to raise awareness and educate children about how their words and actions can affect others, negatively and positively, and to foster children's self-esteem. As we continue with Black History Month, we continue to learn about and honour the contributions of Black Canadians to the history and development of Canada. This week, we will learn about Viola Desmond, and continue to read stories written by or about Black Canadians for young children. Earlier this month, we learned about the history of the underground railroad, the Honourable Jean Augustine, and some influential Black Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr.
Math
We will continue to explore measurement concepts in Grade 2 and 3. In Grade 2, we are learning about linear measurement and how to estimate, measure, and compare lengths using centimetres (cm) and metres (m).
Grade 2 Parent Letter #1 Introducing the Centimetre and the Metre
Grade 2 Parent Letter #2 Estimating Length
Grade 2 Parent Letter #3 Measuring Length
In Grade 3, we reviewed how to measure the length of objects using centimetres and metres. We have begun to learn about the kilometre, its appropriate use, and its relation to other standard measurement units such as metres. This week, we will focus on choosing the appropriate measurement unit (millimetres, centimetres, metres, and kilometres) to measure, and comparing different lengths.
This week in our phonics lessons, we will learn about adding the ending -ING to verbs. We add the -ING ending to verbs when we are talking about actions that continuously happen in the present or past. When a verb has the -ING ending, a helping verb comes before it such as:
I am going. We are going.
She was going. They were going.
This week's new heart words: been, into
Please have your child practise the heart words we have learned so far in class: the, I, a, said, to, do, of, see, he, be, me, from, you, what, have, look, book, are, was, your, want, go, no, so, goes, says, they, their, were, talk, walk, could, should, would, or, for, who, by, my, one, once, use, two, does, many, any, *been, *into.
Family Literacy Night - Tuesday, March 4th
Join us for a fun and informative Family Literacy Evening where you'll discover practical tips and engaging activities to support your child's reading journey at home.
Learn about our school's literacy program, receive valuable resources, and connect with other families. The evening offers a chance to explain literacy methods, ensuring everyone is on the same page and working towards the same goals. This can also help parents understand the terminology used in school reports and conferences.
Practising literacy skills at home with parents offers invaluable benefits for children's development. These shared reading experiences not only strengthen essential reading and writing abilities but also foster a love of learning and a strong foundation for future academic success.
By engaging in fun literacy activities at home, children build confidence, expand their vocabulary, and develop a deeper understanding of language, setting them up for success in school and beyond.
Join us on March 4th at 6:30pm
