 News for Week of March 24 - 28, 2025

Dressing for the Weather:
The weather lately has been inconsistent. Though we have longer daylight time, the ground is still covered in snow in areas, and very wet and muddy in others. Students will continue to need to dress appropriately for the weather with proper water repellent boots, splash pants (or snowpants on snowy days), and jackets. While students are asked to stay out of puddles, accidents happen and result in wet feet and sometimes wet pants. Each student is asked to keep a few extra pairs of socks and even an extra pair of pants at school.

Help Please:
We have been working very hard since September and, as such, many students have run out of supplies, especially gluesticks. While I have a few extras to share, I would appreciate you checking in with your child and sending in another gluestick or two to get them through the next couple of months. Thank you for your help with this.

Grade 3 Homework:
***EQAO Practice booklet #1 is due back to school on Friday, March 28. Please ensure your child brings the booklet back for our consolidation even if they have not finished all of the pages. We will be taking up each question and it is easier if your child has the booklet to follow along with. EQAO Practice booklet #2 will be sent home on Friday, March 28 and due back to school on Thursday, April 4th as April 5th is a P.D. Day.

Grade 2 Homework:
The Grade 2s will bring home phonics homework to reinforce the last couple of lessons about open and closed syllables. The homework will be due back to school on Monday, March 31st.

Our Learning

Math:
In Grade 3, we will continue to explore how to measure the area of 2-dimensional shapes using non-standard units and standard units, such as square centimetres.

In Grade 2, we will continue our 2-digit addition and subtraction unit. This week, we will focus on adding large numbers using base ten materials and place-value concepts.

Language:

During our phonics lessons, we will learn about the -tch ending.

In earlier lessons, we learned that the consonant digraph -ch says /ch/ like at the beginning of the words chicken, chip, and chin. -ch can also come at the end of a word, as in the words such and rich.

The grapheme -tch is another way to spell /ch/. -tch is a trigraph, which means it is three letters that make one sound. -tch can only come at the end of a word immediately after a short vowel sound, as in the words catch and pitch.

This week's new heart words: woman, women

Please have your child practise the heart words we have learned so far in class: the, I, a, said, to, do, of, see, he, be, me, from, you, what, have, look, book, are, was, your, want, go, no, so, goes, says, they, their, were, talk, walk, could, should, would, or, for, who, by, my, one, once, use, two, does, many, any, been, into, friend, because, *woman, *women.

Religion:
We will continue to discuss the meaning of Lent as a time to ask for forgiveness, with a focus on prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. We will also learn about the Parable of the Lost Sheep.
